Tour De France
Presenting a Gastronomic Tour de France
at Marcel's Bistro
For the past twenty four years, Marcel's has been
taking the time to introduce its customers to uncommonly good, authentic
French food; nothing pretentious, just fine food coupled with fine
wines. Now "The Bistro Upstairs" is traveling France in
a new way and we invite you to share this experience in the best
way possible, gastronomically. Starting the second Tuesday of every
month, for two weeks, we will feature authentic dishes, appetizers,
main courses and deserts, from a different region of France, each
with its own distinctive gastronomic flavour. Of course, specially
selected wines to compliment the region and the dish will be available
by the glass or by the bottle.

PARIS ~ ILE DE FRANCE
From May 13th to May 24th
A visit to the best provision shops of Paris recalls allegorical paintings in which personifications of Africa, India and the Orient come to lay their finest fruits at a conquering ruler’s feet. They might make the visitor think that the world exists for the benefit of this one city.
In the past at least until the development of trade in the nineteenth century, a French city depended mainly on surrounding countryside for its food supplies. Beside a fertile soil and temperature climate, Paris has two great rivers for survival; its own Seine and the Loire, which at Orleans was only seventy miles away. From its villages outskirts comes all kind of vegetables. Argenteuil was famous for asparagus, Montreuil for peaches, Montmorency for cherries, St-Germain for peas and Clamart for artichokes and butter.
The memory of this intensive cultivation lingers mainly in the menus of classical French cooking. They are history in short hand of Paris and France itself, economic, social, political, literary history called up by the names of people and places.
Although times have changed and Paris has expanded so much as to transform these once prestigious orchards and farm lands into fallen victims of urban expansion. Its neighbouring region still send their best of everything to the “Capitale”, their modest but genuine contribution to favoured city of the epicure.
But enough written about the region, we wish you a
“Bon Appétit” and of course Santé…
